Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)
  • Sour cream (for garnish)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.
  • Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pot. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and jalapeño (if using). Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, black beans, kidney beans, and chicken broth. Stir well to combine.
  • Add the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir until all the spices are evenly distributed.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors meld together.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Serve hot, garnished with shredded cheddar cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro.

Helpful Tips:

  • To add more depth to the flavor, try adding a dash of cocoa powder or a splash of dark beer.
  • For a spicier chili, keep the seeds in the jalapeño or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • This chili can be made ahead and tastes even better the next day. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Pairings:

This Turkey Chili pairs wonderfully with warm cornbread, a crisp green salad, or a side of tortilla chips. For drinks, consider a refreshing glass of iced tea or a robust red wine.
