Ingredients
- 1 block (400g) of firm tofu, drained and cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, julienned
- 1 yellow bell pepper, julienned
- 1 small broccoli head, cut into florets
- 1 medium carrot, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 1 tablespoon soy sauce until evenly coated, then sprinkle with cornstarch. Toss again to ensure the tofu is thoroughly covered.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu cubes and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining vegetable oil. Add the garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the bell peppers, broccoli, and carrot to the skillet, and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil.
- Return the browned tofu to the skillet, then pour the sauce mixture over the tofu and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly and cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Transfer the stir-fry to a serving bowl and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.
Helpful Tips
If you’re new to cooking with tofu, make sure to press the tofu to remove excess water before using. This helps achieve a crispy texture when cooked. For a creative twist, try adding your favorite seasonal vegetables, like snow peas or snap peas, to the stir-fry for added color and nutrition.
Storage & Substitutions
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm the stir-fry in a skillet over medium heat until heated through. If hoisin sauce is unavailable, you can substitute it with a bit of oyster sauce or additional soy sauce mixed with a touch of honey for sweetness.
Pairing Suggestions
This Tofu Stir-Fry pairs beautifully with a side of steamed jasmine rice or buckwheat noodles for a hearty meal. A light cucumber salad or miso soup can complement the dish and complete the dining experience.
